Drivers getting use to cashless tolling on Kilpatrick Turnpike after weekend transition
The Kilpatrick Turnpike is now cashless after the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority converted to PlatePay over the weekend.
People driving on the Kilpatrick Turnpike will no longer have to carry cash or coins to pay at a toll plaza. Now, they can drive right through and be billed later.
Jack Damrill said drivers are still getting used to the new system 24 hours into the cashless tolling on the turnpike.
"We know some people that tried to drive around the barricades to get into the toll plaza," said Damrill, who is with the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.
The OTA transitioned to cashless tolling over the weekend to make roads safer.
"We've had over 500 accidents in the last six years at the mainline toll plazas. That does not include the side gates and the ramps like MacArthur, May Avenue," Damrill said.
One of those accidents included when four people were hurt after an ambulance slammed into a toll booth last year on the H.E. Bailey Turnpike in Newcastle.
"Safety is at the forefront when you don't have to have traffic stop and merge out of traffic and back into traffic," Damrill said.
He urges drivers to be watchful for the cones now blocking the cash lanes.
"They'll be going through the PikePass lane no matter what. So, if you were paying with cash, we want you to travel the PikePass lanes. Don't stop. Don't slow down," Damrill said. "So, just keep moving, and we will bill you."
Drivers using PlatePay will pay tolls 75% higher than those with a PikePass. Damrill said the price is higher because the OTA will have to look up tag information and mail out invoices.
The cash machines and baskets will be taken out over the next few weeks. The rest of the turnpike system will transition to cashless by 2025.
